Pioneering Artificial Intelligence In The Residential Construction Sector
About Earlybird
Earlybird Technologies Limited (EBT) is a start-up company who’s mission is to pioneer the use of Artificial Intelligence in the residential construction sector by acting as an interface between construction industry clients and academia, to deliver focussed and successful AI solutions.
The company was founded by Andy Hamilton and Luke Whale in light of their experience as Founder/Managing Director and Technical Director respectively of Staircraft Group Limited (staircraftgroup.com), in successfully launching what is believed to be first AI software tool (DAISY™) to produce automated structural designs and framing plans for the construction industry.
Andy Hamilton
Staircraft’s Founder/Managing Director
- Founded Staircraft in 1984.
- Staircraft is the World’s Largest Staircase Manufacturer.
- Staircraft recently celebrated its 2nd consecutive year in ‘The Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100’.
Dr Luke Whale
Staircraft’s Technical Director
- Joined Staircraft Group as Technical Director in 2015.
- Luke is well known in UK as a timber engineer and product development specialist.
- He is a co-author of the European timber design standard (Eurocode 5).
EBT acted on Staircraft’s behalf working with Brainpool Ltd (brainpool.ai) to develop DAISY™, which now serves as a platform upon which other similarly challenging building design tasks can be incorporated. We now wish to seek out and work on similar construction design challenges for other industry clients, to further extend DAISY™’s ability to respond to the industries need for rapid, accurate design solutions and quotations.
Here’s How It Works
- EBT will work with construction industry clients to define and distil the data necessary to develop AI tools to cater for their needs, and agree a suitable project.
- EBT will then work with Brainpool to find suitable expertise within their global network of AI experts and project manage the software development process through to completion and implementation.
- A royalty free license will then be granted to the project originator to use the newly developed functionality integrated within the DAISY™ construction design platform.

About DAISY™
DAISY™ is an acronym for ‘Design AI SYstem’ and is believed to be the first Artificial Intelligence software tool to produce structural designs and framing layouts for the construction industry.
As a first generation ‘Designbot’ DAISY™ uses cutting edge AI technology to create a fully functioning virtual design tool which designs and produces framing layouts for I-joist floors without the need for specialist design technicians. Developed by a team of PhD-level researchers from Brainpool Ltd in conjunction with product know-how from Earlybird Technologies, DAISY™ uses a powerful genetic algorithm coupled with advanced machine learning techniques to design and price optimal floor layouts in minimal time.
Based on priorities set by the user, the tool can produce framing layouts which either minimise material costs, maximise factory production speed or are the simplest to install on the job site. It presents manufacturers with the opportunity to reduce design lead-times and overheads, as well as empowering building designers to see directly, at concept stage, what the implications of their building design decisions might be on both structural feasibility and likely floor component costs.
The newly created AI design platform which DAISY™ provides will now be developed further by Earlybird Technologies and Brainpool to undertake further equally complex design tasks within the construction sector, to streamline construction design/process bottlenecks and to mitigate the shortfall in highly specialised design skills which the industry is suffering from.
